“Moken Reflections (1894-2007)” is a travelling exhibition (Burma-Thailand-France-Switzerland) of photos, objects and children’s drawings recounting the history of Moken nomads, the marine nomads of the Mergui archipelago, from 1894 to today. ![]() Conceived by Jacques Ivanoff and Akram Mohamed, this exhibition highlights the culture of the Moken ethnic and lets us discover the little-known cultural and natural heritage of South Burma and Thailand. It is an original way to spread public awareness on the issue of trans-border populations.
Jacques Ivanoff is an ethnologist, researcher at the CNRS and a member of the IRASEC (Bangkok). He has studied the Moken, marine nomads of the Mergui archipelago first in Thailand and then in Burma, highlighting their culture through dozens of publications, several films and exhibitions. He has worked at the local, regional and national levels on interethnic relations, ethnic and socio-economic consequences of policies for national and international integration. Akram Mohamed is a member of the CETMA (Museum of Natural History, Paris). He has participated in the realisation of several works to highlight the culture of the marine nomads, whom he visited on several occasions after the 2004 tsunami. More importantly, he has participated in the publication of books on the conditions of the Moken and the Moklen in the aftermath of the catastrophe, as well as the organisation of two travelling exhibitions in France. This exhibition is co organised with the DREG, IRASEC Bangkok, the Sirindhorn Anthropology Center and the Chulalongkorn University. ![]() |
