the companies Käfig, Etha Dam and A’corps. Last year, Thai, Laotian, French and multiethnic performances at the festival offered us an opportunity to appreciate Hip-Hop in all its diversity. This year, “La Fête” has invited the company that everyone is talking about in France: Accrorap!

Is it possible to create dreams with an eye on reality? In his latest show, the Accrorap choreographer Kader Attou offers us some laughter and lots of soul. To create this piece, he plunged into the memories of his dancers and his own childhood. From JS Bach to TV news, the soundtrack is a journey in time as the dancers provide lyrical moments, before breaking into a humorous dance performance and a tribute to Folon. This is a show composed of short sequences inspired by burlesque cinema in which tiny touches of humour keep step with choreographic surge in a free, light and poetic style.
“Between pure dancing scenes of solemn brilliance and scenes bursting with high-voltage energy, these men fight so as not to turn into puppets on strings. While the accordion keeps sad feelings away, a singular story of the popular and proletarian France surges subtly in this Hip-Hop dance to which it belongs. A very moving piece of facts imposed with finesse by Kader Attou” – (Rosita Boisseau – Le Monde - January 2008)

La Compagnie Accrorap was born in December 1989 with Kader Attou and his friends Eric Mézino, Mourad Merzouki and Chaouki Said. At that time, dance was a way to keep busy (positively) in the suburbs of Lyon. By merging acrobatics and street dancing, they invented original choreographies. The shows of Accrorap tell us stories, provoke encounters and bring feelings to life. The Accrorap performances reject the appellation “suburb” and stake their claim to a dialogue between Hip-Hop and contemporary dance forms. In 1993, the group met the artist Gilles Rondot. The following year, Accrorap was the star performer at the Dance Bienniale of Lyon, thereby guaranteeing its entry into the French contemporary dance scene. In 1995, Mourad Merzouki left the group to set up his own company: Kafïg (“La Fête” 2007). Accrorap was consecrated on September 5 2008. The French Minister of Culture and Communication appointed Kader Attou to head the La Rochelle National Choreographic Centre. This is a first for a Hip-Hop choreographer.
