Introduction About the Artists
Introducing Plan B...
Sliding acrobats, a mobile stage – inclined, horizontal, vertical – a few white balls suspended in air apparently defying the rules of gravity, music and light in perpetual metamorphosis, these are some of the components of ‘Plan B’, Compagnie 111’s performance staged by New-York director Phil Soltanoff.

Merging the artistry of circus, theatre and video, ‘Plan B’ reassembles a poetic creation though fragments as they reinvent the relationship between space and the laws of gravity. In a surprising atmosphere of formal severity, their performance introduces mystery into daily occurrences, where the art of slow-motion is expertly orchestrated, disclosing the hidden aspects of movement.

Using juggling and acrobatics skills, this thrilling mix of circus, dance and video questions the usual rules associated with theater performances. Staged on a slope, in itself a source of tricks and transformations, ‘Plan B’ juggles with perspective and the laws of gravity.

In September 2000, Compagnie 111 started their trilogy dedicated to space. ‘Plan B’, directed by American Phil Soltanoff, is the second part of the trilogy which presents acrobats, jugglers and musicians faced with a theatrical argument that divides space into its elements: lines, planes and volume.

Each of Compagnie 111’s performances has as a starting point a strong scenographic argument: the scenery - movable and convertible - is the foundation of their work, offering the four performers (Olivier Alenda, Aurelien Bory, Loic Praud and Alexandre Rodoreda) the possibility of escaping gravity. Compagnie 111 is inspired by various influences: cinema, music, painting, as well as artistic movements from the 1920’s, like Constructivism or Bauhaus.

Through all of this, Compagnie 111 tries to connect all of the stage arts: lighting, sound, live and electronic music, video, dance, object design, magic and shadow theatre, that all come together to nourish their creation.

‘Plan B’ is an inventive show, full of humour and poetry, combined with astonishing technical perfection. The four dancers start to fall down an enormous slide, one by one, while pieces of the wall begin to jut forward, creating ledges from which the performers can spring and flip.

Through their circus skills, the four men manage to break universal laws of space and gravity. It’s all about friction, resistance and momentum set in an urban playground.
